PST awards Pakistan medal winners

ISLAMABAD - The Pakistan Sports Trust (PST) distributed cash awards of over Rs.1.475 million amongst the medal winners of the 1st Asian Beach Games, third Commonwealth Games and World Taekwondo Championship, which were held at Bali, Indonesia, Pune, India and Bone, Germany respectively in October 2008. President, Pakistan Olympic Association (POA), Lt. Gen (Retd) Syed Arif Hasan distributed the cash prizes with trophies and souvenirs amongst the medal winners of international sports events. The cash awards ceremony was held here at a local hotel on Friday, as the coaches of the all disciplines were also awarded cash prizes. The biggest prize was awarded to wrestler Ghulam Haider who had won the gold medal in the Bali Games. He pocketed Rs.100, 000, as the silver medals winner Muhammad Ali received the cash awards of Rs.75, 000 while two bronze medals winners got 50 thousands rupees each. The each member of the national hand ball team, which defeated heavyweights Kuwaitis in the final of the 1st Asian Beach Games' fixture were awarded Rs.50,000 and coach was also given the same sum on his brilliant contribution. Rs.175, 000 were also disbursed among the all six members of kabaddi team and their coach that had won the silver medal for Pakistan in 1st Asian Beach Games 2008.National bodybuilder Muhammad Imran Qureshi received cash awards of Rs.50, 000 from the hands of chief guest on his remarkable show in the Bali Games and claimed third place in the 75k.g weight category competition. Two taekwondo players Ghazanfar Ali and Asia Batool pocketed each Rs.75, 000 by winning the silvers medals in the World Taekwondo Championship, which was held in October 25-26 at Bone Germany while their Korean coach Bae Yohan collected Rs.50, 000. On this occasion, Syed Arif Hasan, who is also chairman PST, said that it was good omen for the sports that the youth produced remarkable results in the international competitions. "We focused on budding young players and fill their requirements to meet international level. They did well and performance of the young wrestlers in the 3rd Commonwealth Youth Games 2008 was amazing show, "he added. "The results prove that young boys are toiling hard to achieve their targets. However, they need to work hard to maintain their position and to make improve that with the passage of time. Our taekwondo team also performed well among the best sides of the world in Bone, Germany to earn 5th place in the international competition," he viewed.
