Govt urged to ensure torture-free society for women

ISLAMABAD- To mark the International Women's Day civil society in collaboration with various organisations Sunday held a rally and urged the government to take appropriate measures to end violence against women. They urged the Non Government Organisations (NGOs) to take notice of those 45 percent to 90 percent women who were being subjected to domestic torture but were unable to report it anywhere. The rally commenced from the China Chowk and ended at Parliament House. In her address the civil society activist Furzana Bari said there was dire need to do arrangements, which could enable women to do according to their abilities and desires. She was of the view that there was no need to give honoraria to the women. She urged the government to generate an environment that could provide women a platform where they could perform their duties freely. The participants were holding placards inscribed with slogans like "stop torture against women," "end violence against women". Representatives of Pattan and PODA, two non-government organisations (NGOs) briefed the participants regarding violence and torture cases against women across the country. One of the speakers said that in many such cases of violence and tortures government was playing a role of silent spectator. She regretted that due to criminal negligence of the authorities concerned there was horrible surge of violence including harassment and torture against women in the country has been witnessed.
