ISLAMABAD - Ministry of Interior yesterday tasked the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) to probe allegations of Sarfraz Merchant against MQM leadership about money laundering, having links with the Indian spy agency- Raw and the purchase of illegal weapons.
The official sources said that the ministry handed over the inquiry to FIA to further probe allegations of Sarfraz Merchant, an accused in money laundering case against MQM Chief Altaf Hussain in UK.
Separately, the Ministry of Interior has issued a circular asking all the security and intelligence agencies to provide proof or information about the probe.
FIA has separately written a letter to Sarfraz Merchant to appear before it for recording his statement and to provide evidence against MQM leadership. The ministry would decide to raise the matter with the British government after the inquiry of FIA. Earlier, interior minister had formed a committee to probe allegations of Merchant leveled in a TV interview.
