Gen Raheel pays tribute to slain Karachi cop

ISLAMABAD  - Paying homage to a senior cop who sacrificed his life fighting down the terrorists in Karachi, Pakistan’s military chief has condemned the incident terming it a ‘cowardly act of shame.’
“Chaudhry Aslam rendered exemplary and valuable contributions in the war against terrorism, against which the entire nation is united,” said Chief of Army Staff General Raheel Sharif in a brief statement issued Thursday night.
He also praised the role of law enforcement agencies and security forces, including the police as well as the armed forces and security agencies in the fight against militancy.
Known as a daring cop in police circles, Chaudhry Aslam, a Superintendent of Police at Karachi Police and Chief of Crime Investigation Department (CID), along with his driver and guards, was fatally targeted in a suicide attack at Layari Express Way in Essanagri town of Karachi Thursday evening. Notorious terrorist umbrella organisation Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) claimed responsibility of the assault.
The attack came to avenge the killings of three alleged terrorists from TTP killed a day earlier. On Wednesday night, a CID police party led by Chaudhry Aslam had killed them in a shootout.
The COAS statement on CID chief assassination said, “This is a cowardly act of shame.”
His words came a day after the terrorists also attacked a security forces check post in South Waziristan Agency (SWA) Wednesday “which was successfully repulsed by the security forces while inflicting heavy casualties to the terrorists. As many as ten terrorists were killed due to valiant response by security forces,” the military said. Captain Yahya Abdul Samad, an army officer, was among the causalities of this attack whose funeral prayer was held here in Islamabad Thursday.
