‘Free media precondition for strong democracy’





ISLAMABAD – Media has always considered itself as an institution making necessary efforts aimed to provide voice to the citizens who are either ignored or denied this right.
When it comes to elections, it is expected of the media to shed light on issues, which are directly affecting the citizens. Media an integral part and precondition for strong and stable democracy in a country therefore media needs to play its due role, said Shaukat Ali Ashraf coordinator Individualland Pakistan (IL-Pakistan).
He said that IL-Pakistan is striving to promote the concept of free, independent and responsible media (FIRM) with relation to upcoming elections in Pakistan. IL-Pakistan along with Friedrich-Naumann-Stifting fur die Freiheit (FNF) is actively engaging with the media, so that citizen groups and media can learn from each other.
The IL-Pakistan has arranged a number of workshops in different parts of the country Including Lahore, Multan, Swabi, Mardan as well as in the federal capital. Hundreds of journalists participated in these workshops.
Shaukat said that Pakistani media has come a long way and succeeded in its struggle to attain freedom. In the last decade, media has experienced a tremendous change and growth. It has now enacted itself on a path towards, where it ensures transparency in governance, as well as other aspects in life, she said.
He said that the next general elections are around the corner and while preparations are being made by media outlets for the coverage, the media has also to realise its role in the current dynamics of Pakistan. This will ensure a smooth and unbiased flow of information to the people, in order to make their independent decisions, he said.
Shaukat said since 1992, as many as 41 journalists have laid down their lives in the line of duty.
The media in Pakistan today is on the forefront of conflict without much safeguards, he said.
