300 traffic cops to be deployed in markets

ISLAMABAD (APP) - The Islamabad Traffic Police (ITP) has decided to deploy 300 policemen in various markets of the Capital during the last Ashra (decade) of Ramazan to control traffic-related problems when people will throng the markets for Eid shopping. As many as 300 traffic policemen will be deployed at various markets to avoid parking congestion and ensure smooth flow of traffic during the last Ashra as the people will come out for Eid shopping. Special deployment of traffic cops will also be made outside main mosques to avoid traffic rush when the people would sit in 'Aitikaf, Senior Superintendent of Police (Traffic) Dr Sultan Azam Temuri said here Wednesday. He said that special deployment was being made at various points of the Capital before 'Iftar so as to avoid traffic mess. Traffic cops are also being served Iftari at this point, he added. Ratio of accidents and rash driving comparatively increase ahead of Eid as people come out of their homes for shopping. To ensure safe road environment in the Capital and for the convenience of the road users, this special deployment has been planned, the SSP (Traffic) maintained. Dr Temuri said that one-wheeling and other road stunts are high in the Capital on three days of a week i.e. Friday, Saturday and Sunday. This practice is going on in Islamabad now a day around 3:00am to 4:00 am. Special squads have been constituted to control this practice and our cops have been successful in nabbing the organizers of such road stunts, he added. Few days before, the organisers of racing and one-wheeling opened fire at traffic police team in the area of Shehzad Town police station when they were chasing those involved in these practices. Luckily, our officers escaped. The other night, our offices cordoned off this area and succeeded to arrest the culprits who opened fire at the traffic policemen, the SSP maintained. Islamabad police have the policy to ensure safety on roads and those involved in rash driving and underage driving would be dealt with iron hand, he added.
