Rawalpindi - The Nullah Lai Monitoring Committee has asked Rawalpindi Solid Waste Management Company to place containers around the nullah to stop dumping of solid waste into it.
These directions were issued in a meeting of Nullah Lai Monitoring Committee held at Water and Sanitation Agency (WASA) to review the ongoing work of dredging/ desilting of Nullah Lai by WASA authorities. Representatives of Federal Flood Commission, Rescue 1122, Pakistan Meteorological Department, Cantonment Boards, Rawalpindi Solid Waste Management and WASA attended the meeting.
Director Sewerage WASA Aziz Ullah Khan briefed the participants about the ongoing work of dredging/ desilting of Nullah Lai. He said that this year Rs 30 million were allocated by Punjab government for the purpose and work was started in the month of February 2015 which was in progress and would be completed by the end of March 2015.  He added that currently WASA has started the work on up and downstream of Dhoke Naju, Phagwari Bridge Khyaban-e-Sir Syed and Pir Wadhai Bridge.  The main focus was to restore the channel width and depth of Nullah Lai as per original specifications.
During the meeting it was agreed that strict measures should be taken to stop dumping of solid waste and building waste material into Nullah Lai. In this regard RWMC should take immediate action and mechanism for proper collection and disposal of solid waste be ensured and strict legal action should be taken against those who found dumping of solid waste into Nullah Lai.
In the end participants visited Nullah Lai and inspected the work of dredging/ desilting at Dhoke Naju and Phagwari Bridge and showed their satisfaction. MD WASA Raja Shaukat Mahmood appealed the residents along Nuallah Lai to avoid throwing and dumping solid waste into Nullah Lai because this creates hindrances to the flow of Nullah which results in flooding during monsoon season. However he made it clear that strict action would be taken against those who are practicing this illegal activity.  In this regard WASA has also displayed awareness banners and distributed pamphlets.
