Rawalpindi - Despite numerous complaints by administration and students regarding the garbage dumped at the gate of Government Degree College for Women, Peshawar Road, the authorities concerned have failed to remove the waste.
Irked with the authorities’ apathy, the college administration and other people have now written a complaint to the Station Commander and Executive Officer of Rawalpindi Cantonment Board to take appropriate action against the sanitary workers who were not lifting the garbage.
The students and college administration were planning to hold a protest demonstration on Peshawar Road against the sanitary staff of civic body for its failure in removing the heap of trash.
The garbage included offal, entrails of sacrificial animal, rotten fruits and vegetables, expired food and other stuff are also creating problems for shoppers visiting Sasta Bazaar set up near the college.
A large number of female students of the Government Degree College for Women, while talking to The Nation on Friday, said that they were suffering from the foul smell emanating from the dump, which also led to unsanitary conditions and polluting air. They said that they could not eat snacks or lunch during free time because of dirty smell and often suffered with vomiting in the college. “Despite our complaints made with the RCB, the sanitary workers are not paying heed towards the heap of garbage,” they added.
Sumaira, a 2nd year student, said that throwing garbage outside the educational institution was a crime and action should be taken against those who dump waste here. She said that sanitary staff should also lift the garage at earliest so that the students and teachers did not suffer anymore.
Zubia Javed, another student, said that the whole area was covered with foul smell coming from the garbage dump near college gate. She said the delay in removing the trash could lead to serious health hazards. “Students could not concentrate on their studies properly due to unhealthy environment,” said Sobia Satti, Mehwish Naz and Rimsha Rajpoot, adding that so many students have even started taking leaves from college due to this unhealthy environment. The civic bodies should take notice of the gravity of the situation. They said that the girl students and college administration were contemplating to assemble on Peshawar Road to register their strong protest against dumping of garbage outside the educational institution. The cell number of CEO Rawalpindi Cantonment Board Faheem Zafar was switched off when The Nation tried to approach him to know his version about the failure of civic body to lift the garbage.
