Fear still haunts foreigners

ISLAMABAD - While majority of Westerners, both Americans and Britons have left Pakistan, those who are still staying here are reportedly facing accommodation and security problems. As a result of law and order situation that has gripped the entire country, the problems of foreign nationals of diverse origins residing in Pakistan have been mounting. Citizens of Eastern and Western Europe, Latin American, Middle Eastern, Gulf, Asia Pacific and Central Asian regions are searching for safe accommodations to avoid any untoward incident, TheNation observed. Some real estate agents operating in Diplomatic Enclave, G-5, G-6, F-5, F-6 and other localities of the Capital told this correspondent that they were frequently being contacted by the foreigners of different nationalities who are in search of safe accommodations. An estate agent, asking not to be identified, said that numerous foreigners have often changed their residences in the last few months. "In the past, foreigners would select suitable accommodations for themselves where they would reside during their entire tenure in Pakistan. But now, they prefer to change their localities after only a few months," he revealed. The sole factor that contributes to this situation is related to the fear that prevails among foreigners besides locals," he added. Another estate dealer said that the expenditures, which the foreign nationals are incurring regarding accommodation, are much greater as compared to the past. "All they need is security and peace of mind and they are paying very high prices for that. Besides, changing homes every now and then costs them a lot," he mentioned. Replying to a query related to the maximum earnings by estate dealers regarding foreigners, he agreed that foreigners are being charged at will. "The foreigners, especially Europeans, don't argue much about the rental fares and usually agree to what is being demanded," he added. Omer Barakat, an Arab national from Gulf origin, said that the foreign nationals from Muslim countries usually don't perceive threats of being specific targets of terrorists in Pakistan. But, he said, the ongoing tide of terrorism is a matter of concern for all the people, whether Muslims or non-Muslims, foreigners or locals. "The residential studios and apartments that are available in Diplomatic Enclave are too expensive to be hired. But now, foreigners working in United Nations and multinationals are hiring them, since they are more secure than other residential areas," said a European diplomat living in Diplomatic Enclave. "The foreigners who have been provided accommodation by their embassies in Diplomatic Enclave feel safer than those who have to arrange accommodation on their own," he observed. Meanwhile, it is also witnessed that Westerners prefer to keep mellow profiles by shifting to less crowded areas like F-11 and E-11 and hiring security guards from privates security companies.
