A meeting of the Judicial Commission chaired by Chief Justice Iftikhar Chaudhry on Saturday nominated Justice Ejaz Ahmed Chaudhry as Chief Justice Lahore High Court to take the post after Justice Khawaja Mohammad Sharif retires in December. Members of the commission discussed which judges will fill up vacant seats of the Supreme Court bench and the decision of the appointment of a chief justice for the Islamabad High Court as well. Federal Law Minister Babar Awan, Attorney General and representatives of the Pakistan Bar Council also attended the meeting. Law Minister Punjab Rana Sanuallah and Justice Khawaja Sharif were also in attendance. The first session of the Judicial Commission to initiate the process of filling actual and anticipated vacancies in the superior judiciary was held in Islamabad last week. Chairing the meeting, Justice Iftikhar had said the old system for the selection of judges has been replaced. The nomination will be sent to Prime Minister Yousaf Raza Gilani, who will forward it to President Asif Ali Zardari for formal approval.
