QAU employees may go on strike in protest

ISLAMABAD - The employees of Quaid-i-Azam University (QAU) may go on strike if the university authorities continue to force them to shift to the newly constructed academic block, as the move, according to them, would cause hurdles for the students and employees. The Employees Welfare Association has called its general body meeting tomorrow (Monday) in which decision would be taken against the forced vacation of the old building and shifting of the administration to new one Joint Academic Block. They said if the vice-chancellor persists to shift the administration, employees would go on an indefinite strike in retaliation. The university authorities tried to shift the universitys administration to new building on Saturday but on the resistance of the employees they failed. The students also joined the employees, which compelled the authorities to leave the issue till Monday. The students have also written an application to the chancellor of the university, President Asif Ali Zardari, appealing him to intervene and cancel the decision regarding shifting of the administration. In this connection a meeting of EWA had also been held on September 7 wherein the association had rejected the decision of transferring the administration to the newly constructed block (Joint Academic Block), which, according to them, would cause hurdles in routine matters of the university. The employees and students have been resisting the decision taken by the vice-chancellor, who is about to leave the position after few weeks, saying that the shifting of university administration to the new block which is far away from the university bank and departments and the decision would cause problems for the students and employees. The employees told TheNation that the new block built in 2007 was meant for the faculty and to conduct seminars but the vice-chancellor has been forcing the administration to shift there. The newly constructed block is also not in a good condition as substandard material was used during construction. The VC has been forcing the employees to shift just to show that the building is no more vacant.
