List of persons who got loans waived presented in SC

State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) has presented in Supreme Court (SC) a list containing 5 volumes of the persons who have got their loans waived during 2009. The list has been presented during the course of hearing of loans write off case by a 4-member bench of SC presided over by the Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry here on Monday. The court while expressing displeasure over governor SBP report about closure of Indus sugar mills has remarked, dont cut joke with the court. Banks have written off loans but this is public wealth and no one will be allowed to plunder it this way. Real facts be presented before the court otherwise governor state bank will be summoned, court observed. Counsel for Indus Sugar Mills told mill was not completely closed. On the other hand it was said in governor SBP report that mill remained closed for six years. Iqbal Haider counsel for SBP presented in SC a list containing 5 volumes of the persons who got their loans written off during 2008-9. As per this list number of the persons who got waived loan more than 500000 rupees each runs to 8698 and under this head loans amounting to Rs 38 billion were got written off. The number of the persons who got loans waived less than Rs 500000 each stand at 44949 and under this head loans amounting to Rs 36 billion were got waived. The court while expressing dissatisfaction over the report inquired how much progress had been made with reference to this case. It seemed governor SBP was not taking interest in this case. Iqbal Haider told loans were written off vide circular No 29 released by SBP. This circular was issued in line with law, he stated. According to you every thing has been done correctly. But how can it be possible that factories earn profit and they get their loans waived too , justice Ramday remarked. Counsel for SBP remarked governor SBP had finalized report. However consultation process was underway with the bank in this connection, he told. Charter out the way for ensuring return of the loans besides consultation process. If court get comply these orders then not a single penny will be left. When institutions are working then the amount along with interest will have to be returned. Court will review what are the motives behind issuance of circular-29 in connection with waiving the loans, CJP remarked. The court issued directives for presenting details report with reference to Redco Textile and Indus Sugar Mills before it on the next hearing. The hearing of the case has been adjourned till March, 10.
