Atta shortage still persists

RAWALPINDI  - The people of Rawalpindi city and surrounding areas are facing the worst kind of atta shortage. During a survey by this correspondent not a single bag of 20 kg atta was found in Sadiqabad, Muslim Town and the suburb areas which is an ample proof of the government's inability. On the other side the nanbais (bakers) have also increased the bread price without maintaining its weight. The bread, which was being sold at the rate of Re 1 some three years back, is now being sold at the rate of Rs 5.         The government claims that it has sufficient stock of wheat in the provinces but the stock is not available in the open market and it is only the tall claims of the government. Pakistan is an agricultural country at its 70 per cent population is associated with the profession agriculture but despite it the country if facing worst kind of shortage of atta and other agriculture-related commodities like onion, rice, tomatoes and other commodities.. The political and social circles of the area in a joint statement have complained that, on one side, the government was claiming that the country's economy has improved and the status of common man has raised, but on the other, the people are facing the worst kind of atta crisis. They expressed their fear that atta is not available in the months of June and July as the wheat crop has reached then what would be situation in November and December. They said the present government has also not taken any solid step for ensuring the availability of atta in the atta shops. They said they were hoping that the new government would resolve all their problems, including atta availability on control rate and inflation, but for the last four months it did nothing for the welfare of the people, rather it increases the POL prices due to which the prices of edibles also increased besides raise in transport fares. The people of area have demanded of the government to ensure availability of atta in the market and its sale on fixed rate.
