'Promoting democratic norms PPP govt hallmark'

ISLAMABAD (APP)- Federal Minister for Religious Affairs Hamid Saeed Kazmi said here on Sunday the PPP-led coalition government believed in promoting culture of tolerance and reconciliation in the society and flourishing democratic norms was its hallmark. In an exclusive interview with this agency, the minister said, "PPP does not believe in politics of confrontation, therefore, since February 18 elections, it has been holding consultation with all stakeholders on important national and international issues for the cause of democracy." He said electing Prime Minister Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani unopposed and passage of various unanimous resolutions at floor of the house was reflective of PPP's serious efforts, which it has been making for strengthening of democracy, and ensuring supremacy of parliament and rule of law in the country. Commenting on the one year performance of the coalition government, Hamid Saeed Kazmi said despite the fact that the incumbent government inherited a host of problems from the previous government like deteriorating law and order situation and sinking economy, it has exhibited great political acumen and put the country on consistent path to progress and prosperity. However, he said there was still a lot to do for well-being of the common man and improving living standard of the downtrodden segment of the society. To a question, the minister said broader political reconciliation was need of the hour to confront the challenges faced by the nation, especially menace of extremism and terrorism. He termed the incident of Mumbai attacks as "great challenge" for Pakistan, adding the government has adopted a very effective strategy to tackle the situation. Hamid Saeed Kazmi said Pakistan is itself victim of extremism and terrorism and has rendered unmatched sacrifices in the global war against terrorism.
