National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) and its functionaries were fully active and continuing relief operation even during the Eid holidays to ensure that quake-hit people could also be included in celebrations of this auspicious religious festival.Chairman NDMA Maj Gen Saeed Aleem in an interview stressed the rehabilitation and reconstruction of Balochistan quake hit areas and urged all stakeholders to play their effective role. Chairman said NDMA has almost completed the relief operation successfully in Balochistan with coordination of its provincial unit, Pakistan Army and provincial government.
NDMA has made food and other essential items available in Awaran district enough for at least two months. Over 135000 food packs, 46,000 tents, 28,000 blankets, 20,000 plastic sheets and at least 23,000 mosquito nets have been supplied to quake-hit areas of Balochistan. 
The Major General said each food pack is enough for fortnight supplies of a seven-member family, which includes flour, biscuits, milk, water and other ration. 
Talking about NDMA’s rehabilitation plan, Saeed Aleem said government has a resolve to carry out all reconstruction activities through its own resources, and so far has not decided to make an appeal for foreign aid. 
NDMA is carrying out a survey to gauge the damages exactly, which is crucial for laying out the rehabilitation plan. 
He said rehabilitation plan will be comprising on two phases and in initial phase, NDMA will construct temporary shelters for affected people.  The second phase is the actual task ahead, which is a long-term activity.  NDMA will reconstruct earthquake resistant houses, schools, hospitals and other buildings in second rehab phase. 
He said that government had made all necessary arrangements for the security of teams taking part in relief operations in Awaran, Ketch, Mashkai, Mangoli, Malar and Dhandar. It is unfortunate that miscreants created hindrances in relief activities in some areas. 
Regarding NDMA’s own growth, the Major General stressed the government to build its capacity at all levels, especially focus on strengthening infrastructure and functioning of its district units.
Regretting the absence of its strong district units, he said effective presence at grass root level is need of the hour to cope with any disaster.  Citing the example of recent earthquakes in Balochistan, he said district disaster management authorities had to carry out all rescue and rehab operations on grounds, but there was no presence of Rescue 1122, civil defense, information cells, transportation, warehouses and food godowns.
