Minister promises revival of sports

ISLAMABAD - Federal Minister for Sport Pir Aftab Shah Jillani vowed to resurrect the country's sports which he said were at their lowest ebb. While talking to a selective group of reporters here at National Press Club (NPC) Monday late night, he said that government would support all the national sports federations to enhance the standard of their respective disciplines in the country. "Though we are lagging far behind other nations but we cannot compare the performance of our athletes with those of the developed countries. We are toiling hard to achieve results in international events but it will take time," he said. The Minister further said that Pakistan Sports Board (PSB) had the powers to decrease or slash the annual grant of any federation on performance basis. "We will inspect the performance of all affiliated sports bodies including squash," he said when a asked about Pakistan's poor show in the British Open Squash Championship. Aamir Atlas, Farhan Mehboob and Yasir Butt were shown doors in the first round prestigious squash showpiece of the world.Aftab further said that the PCB was not under the control of his ministry . "The PSB and the PCB were established under the same rules but though the PSB is under the control of the Ministry but the PCB is being run by a Governing Board," he said.Jillani vowed to bring international events back in Pakistan and added that the Ministry was negotiating with sports bodies to hold the such competitions. "The government is determined that it will provide tight security to foreign players in future," he maintained.
