Police guarding Capital sans water, shelter facilities

ISLAMABAD-Capital police is facing immense problems in guarding Islamabad because of the lack of proper facilities as well as authorities negligence. Various police officials deployed at different checkposts have not been provided with the necessary facilities during their duty hours. In the current security scenario, a large number of police officials are deputed at the checkposts established on the entrance and exit points of the city to handle any untoward situation and to keep an eye on suspicious persons. They remain on duty from 8 to 12 hours and during all this while, they are not even provided with transport facilities to reach their point of duty or back home. They are offering their duties at these checkposts in the scorching heat without proper shelter. They have to keep standing under the trees to escape heat. The extreme hot conditions have forced them to stay away from the checkposts thus putting the security of the capital under threat. On the other hand, there is no system or mechanism of provision of food and water for them and they have to arrange it on their own. One by one they go to the nearby hotels for lunch and dinner. Water facility is the major problem for them which they have to ask for from the near by houses or the CDA tankers if any one passes by them. Under such poor conditions, these police officials are also deprived of weekly off. Their consecutive deployment and long hours of duty on the checkposts may prove damaging for their health. A police constable deployed at one of the check post told TheNation that there was no shadow nor shelter at the checkpost and he was compelled to bear direct sunlight. He added that they were offering their duty with full zeal and zest, especially after the increase in their salaries but they needed proper shelters to keep alert. He requested the high-ups to arrange it for the force, as it would make their working efficiency better. A Sub Inspector said that there was a dire need of water availability as no arrangement had yet been made to provide them water on the check posts. He said that the constables himself go to the near by hotels, houses to get water while some time it was taken from the CDA tanker, if passes from the check post. He said that CDA should install small water tanks or filtration plants near these check posts while a proper system of delivering food on the check posts should also be made. Our duty hours are too long and during these there is no proper system for supplying food. We one by one go to the market for lunch and dinner which takes long time and we can not take lunch and dinner on time, he added.
