Metro drivers protest delayed salaries

RAWALPINDI - The drivers and security guards of metro buses yesterday protested the delay in release of their salaries and imposition of fines on them. Scores of drivers and security guards observed one-hour strike against Punjab Metro Bus Service management for not releasing salaries on time and imposing fines in case of theft of any minor thing from the track or stations.
A driver told The Nation that he has been performing his duty with commitment but the management was not paying him on time. “Because of the delay, my family is suffering badly,” he said. He said that despite several requests the management did not pay heed towards the drivers’ maladies and they were forced to go on strike.
“We are fined Rs 2,000 by the management even if a nail goes missing from the construction sites of the project,” said a security guard seeking anonymity. He said that the fines were much heavier than their meagre salaries. This was injustice and should be ended immediately, he demanded. After one hour, the protesters called off their strike on the assurance given by the management that their maladies would be resolved soon. Meanwhile, thousands of passengers faced troubles at different metro stations in twin cities.
