Sherry urges youth to play role for strengthening democracy

ISLAMABAD - Federal Minister for Information and Broadcasting Sherry Rehman called upon youth to come forward and play their role in strengthening of democratic institutions in the country. She was addressing the launching ceremony of the second term of Youth Parliament of Pakistan for year 2008-09 held under the aegis of PILDAT here on Wednesday. On successful completion of the first-ever Youth Parliament in the history of Pakistan, PILDAT launched the second term Youth Parliament of Pakistan for 2008-09. Information Minister Sherry Rehman was Chief Guest while Senator S.M Zafar, Wazir Ahmed Jogezai, Dr Donya Aziz, MNA and Ahmed Bilal Mehboob, Executive Director of Pakistan Institute of Legislative Development and Transparency (PILDAT) were also present on the occasion. Sherry Rehman said that Youth Parliamentarians were not only adult for politics but also were conscious "You are future of Pakistan and we have long term aspirations for you," she added. Sherry Rehman further said that the government would encourage the youngsters to come forward and take part in politics for the purpose of strengthening the national institutions and democracy. "Democracy should be your aim, we cannot understand real meaning of democracy without opposition, consultancy and consensus, these all should be your main goals," she emphasised and stressed upon the Youth Parliament to make different committees for solving national issues. She lamented that dictatorship had ruled in Pakistan for long time due to this our institutions have been weak. She said, "For the purpose of real democracy Youth Parliamentarians should be cooperative to each other. Your main objectives are legislation and demand accountability from those in government as watchdog" while adding being a politician you must have courage because politics is name of challenges. She further said, "Pakistan People's Party is the only party which granted permission to media for live converge of National Assembly proceeding.  She advised to Youth Parliamentarians to join different political parties which would be helpful in your forthcoming political career". The aim of government is to stabilise the national institutions and bring real democracy in the country," she said, adding dictators were always responsible to destabilise the national institutions. Senator S.M Zafar Chairman Steering Committee for Youth said that Pakistan Youth Parliament is preparing National debaters. He advised the Youth Parliamentarian to focus on collective approach rather than individual thinking. Speaker of the Youth Parliament Wazir Ahmed Jogezia praised the previous Youth Parliament's progress and said that his cooperation would continue with Youth Parliament. It may be mentioned here that Youth Parliament's 61 members have been selected for new tenure 2008-2009. The seats have been divided among different areas on the basis of population. However, one seat each is given to Azad Jammu and Kashmir and the Northern areas in the Youth Parliament of Pakistan.
