ISLAMABAD - Dispelling the criticism of opposition that it has backtracked on registering overseas Pakistanis as voters, the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) said it is determined to give voting right to expatriates.
A statement issued here Tuesday said the ECP has already constituted a high-level committee under the supervision of Masood Malik, ADG Elections that includes two MNAs Arif Alvi and Dr Tariq Fazal Chaudhry.
The committee studied and examined feasibility of different options for facilitating the overseas Pakistanis through postal ballot, internet voting and in-person voting etc.
The ECP clarified that it has not abandoned its efforts to give voting rights to the overseas Pakistanis adding millions of countrymen living abroad would be given their due rights to use their votes in any election taking place in the country. The committee it said has so far conducted sixteen meetings and discussed all the legal and technical issues/provisions about various possibilities of providing voting right to the overseas Pakistan.
“Resultantly, sixteen different recommendations have been finalised and forwarded to the ECP that are being deliberated thoroughly,” the ECP said in the statement.
