ICT kicks off campaign against smoking


ISLAMABAD – District Administration has launched month-long public awareness campaign against smoking at public places and to mobilise all the stakeholders about hazards of tobacco use as well as implementation of Prohibition of Smoking and Protection of Non-Smokers Health Ordinance, 2002 in Islamabad.District implementation and monitoring committee has been constituted to monitor the progress of implementation of anti-smoking law and to review the progress of the campaign on monthly basis. The committee would be consisting officials of Tobacco Control Cell, Secretary, Islamabad Transport Authority (ITA), Islamabad Traffic Police (ITP), Capital Development Authority, Custom Services, District Health Department, Islamabad and Federal Directorate of Education.All the stakeholders including trader community, hotels and restaurants owners, representatives of bar associations and chambers of commerce and industries, heads of educational institutions would also be taken on board during this campaign and meetings would be held with them seeking their co-operation to this effect.The official source said main emphasis of this campaign would be to create awareness in the public, protect health of non-smokers and mobilising public opinion against smoking at public places.A plan of action has been also devised for this campaign and it has been decided to hold meetings with the transporters, representatives of Chambers of Commerce and Industries, Islamabad and heads of schools and colleges managements, traders.The officials of Tobacco Control Cell, ITP, Secretary ITA would also arrange orientation sessions with the stakeholder for imparting proper training to them and creating awareness among the general public about hazards of smoking. The source said that ITP has also started campaign to check smoking in public transport.
