Law, justice body considers law reform proposals today

ISLAMABAD – A meeting of Law and Justice Commission of Pakistan will be held at the Supreme Court building here today (Saturday) to consider Law Reform Proposals for amendments in various statutes to bring them in conformity with the changing needs of the society.The commission will consider amendments in Section 426 & 497 of the Criminal Procedure Code 1898 which relates to grant of facility of bail to the pregnant women and mothers of suckling babies languishing in jails.Keeping in view the increasing complaints against the investigating officers regarding defective investigation and its impact on the society and lowering the image of judiciary the commission will consider the proposal for amendment in PPC. It will also examine the proposals to enhance the effectiveness of Illegal Dispossession Act 2005 and stoppage of its possible misuse.Besides that it would also discuss proposals regarding settlement of disputes through Alternate Dispute Resolution mechanism, enhancement of jurisdiction of Family Court. In addition, the Commission will examine proposal for enhancing the scope of Smoking and Protection of Non-Smokers Health Ordinance 2002. It would also examine amendment in High Court Rules & Orders, Service Tribunals Acts etc.The meeting will be held under the chairmanship of Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry, who is also the chairman LJCP, and also attended by Attorney General for Pakistan Irfan Qadir, Chief Justice Federal Shariat Court Agha Rafiq Ahmed Khan, Chief Justice Balochistan High Court Qazi Faez Isa, Chief Justice Sindh High Court Mushir Alam, Chief Justice Lahore High Court Sh Azmat Saeed, Chief Justice Peshawar High Court Dost Muhammad Khan and Yasmin Abbasey, Secretary, Ministry of Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs.Chief Justice Islamabad High Court Iqbal Hameed-ur-Rehman will also attend the meeting on special invitation. Besides, the newly appointed members of the Commission Justice (Retd) Abdul Karim Khan Kundi, former judge Peshawar High Court, Abid Hassan Minto, senior advocate, Supreme Court of Pakistan, Syed Iqbal Haider, senior advocate, Supreme Court of Pakistan will also attend the meeting for the first time.
