College teachers warn of boycotting classes

ISLAMABAD – The teachers of model colleges staged a protest demonstration in front of the National Press Club on Thursday against the non-payment of hiring allowance for the last two years warning the education managers to pay the amount within a week or else they would boycott classes and observe complete strike in the educational institutions.
Nearly 250 teachers of 20 model colleges holding banners and placards gathered in front of National Press Club (NPC) and raised slogans against the Federal Directorate of Education (FDE) under which the colleges have been working.
The teachers also blocked the road but overall the protest remained peaceful and academic activity also remained continued. It’s pertinent to mention that they have been silently protesting since October 8 by wearing black armbands during classes against the pending dues.
The teachers complained that for the last two years over 700 teaching staff of model colleges who are registered to get the hiring facility have not been getting the amount to pay rents to the owners which they cant pay from their own meager salary and now owners are reluctant to rent out their houses to any teacher. And, ironically, about 1500 newly inducted teachers have not been registered for the facility that is sheer injustice to a government employee as the employees of other government departments are paid the amount in advance.
President of Central Academic Staff Association Riaz Anjum addressing the protesters demanded that the teachers of model colleges be paid 100 percent hiring allowance within a week and newly appointed teachers should also be entitled for the facility otherwise the teachers will boycott the classes and other activities.
He also sought the seat upgradation of the lecturers from grade 17 to grade 18 like university lecturers as per announcement of the previous governments.  He also highlighted that the FDE should stop hiring people in grade 18 and 19 bypassing the Federal Public Service Commission (FPSC) and all the appointment should be made through FPSC.
The teachers maintained that the hiring facility either should be paid along with the salary or the educational institutions should be directly released the funds for the payments as FDE officials misuse the funds instead of releasing them to the teachers.
