ISLAMABAD (APP) - 'National Poverty Survey under Benazir Income Support Programme (BISP) would be initiated soon to ascertain the percentage of poor in the country. The pilot project of poverty survey carried out in 16 poorest districts of all the provinces including Azad Jammu and Kashmir and Northern Areas has been completed, official sources of BISP told this news agency on Friday. The documentation of pilot survey findings is in process and the report will be finalised soon which would help to carry out poverty survey on national level. The national survey, to be completed by June 2010, will identify more deserving families. The survey is aimed at enhancing living standard of poor and alleviating poverty. In pilot survey, international parameters of 'Poverty Score Card were used for house-to-house survey in May this year. During the survey, it was ensured that no eligible family was missed from getting benefits of the programme. The first ever poverty survey was carried out by Pakistan Poverty Alleviation Fund (PPAF), Rural Support Programmes Network (RSPN), in collaboration with Population Census Organisation (PCO). World Bank has provided technical assistance for 'Poverty Score Card survey as well as institutional improvement of the programme. The programme had already catered 2.2 million families and the number of beneficiaries would be enhanced to five million families during this year. The districts for the survey were selected on basis of their poverty level, accessibility, security situation and the presence of the surveying organizations. The districts include Musakhel, Kila Saifullah and Kech/Turbat of Balochistan, Lakky Marwat, Karak and Batgram of NWFP, Layyah, Mianwali, Multan, Pakpatan of Punjab, Sanghar, Mirpurkhas, Tharparkar of Sindh, Poonch of AJK, Ghanchae and Diamir districts of Northern Areas. The beneficiaries would be entitled to such free services as insurance, health and accident covering. Free technical training would also be awarded by BISP to at least one person of the registered families. In order to ensure more efficient and transparent payment mechanism, the Benazir Smart Card would be introduced soon along with other technology based payment solutions, the source said. BISP is one of the biggest poverty alleviation programme in South Asia, being conducted transparently and is totally non-political.
