SC rejects federation petition in judges appointment case

Supreme Court of Pakistan on Wednesday disposed off review petition filed by the Federation on the decision against the rejection of the names of six judges of Lahore and Sindh High courts by of Parliamentary Committee. A four member comprising Justice Mahmood Akhtar Shahid Siddiqui, Justice Jawwad S. Khawaja, Justice Khiji Arif Hussain and Justice Tariq Parvez Khan heard the case. The bench in its short verdict announced to dismiss the Petition against the rejection of the names of six judges of Lahore and Sindh High courts and rejected the recommendation of Parliamentary committee in this regard. On March 04, the SC had declared the decision of the Parliamentary Committee on the Appointment of Judges as null and void and directed the government to issue notification for one-year tenure extensions to six judges of Lahore and Sindh High Court (SHC) judges. The same bench of apex court would hear a case next week for initiation of contempt proceeding against law secretary for not implementing apex court order regarding recommendations of judicial commission for appointment of superior court's judges. Two lawyers Munir Hussain Bhatti and Kamran Murtaza filed petitions under Articles 187, 190 and 204 of the constitution, praying the apex court to pass an order for prosecution and punishment of law secretary Masood Chishti with a custodial sentence for having committed contumacious contempt of the apex court.
