Army bags six gold medals in National Swimming

ISLAMABAD - Defending champions Army collected all six gold medals on the opening day of the 49th National Men's Swimming Championship that started here at Pakistan Sports Complex on Friday. Director General Pakistan Sports Board (PSB) graced the open ceremony as a chief guest. President Pakistan Swimming Federation (PSF) Kamran Ahmed Lashari was also present on this eve. Army men aggregated 74 points by claiming 6 gold and five silvers in the national swimming event. WAPDA got one silver and three bronzes to set their place on second spot at point's table with 37 points. Navy could earn only three bronzes after competing in six swimming disciplines. Sindh, Punjab, NWFP, Islamabad, Pakistan Air Force (PAF) and Higher Education Commission (HEC) could show impressive performance. Meanwhile, in the water polo competitions, Army, WAPDA, Navy and Punjab qualified for the semi-finals by beating their respective opponents in the outer swimming pool at same venue. Army beat Sindh 15-0 in the first round while Navy outplayed NWFP 12-0. WAPDA defeated Balochistan 11-0 and Punjab overcame HEC 8-0. The semi-finals will be played on Saturday (today) at same venue.
