ISLAMABAD - Civil society activists on Thursday vowed to resist any move aimed at sabotaging the restoration of Chief Justice Iftikhar Chaudhry while demanding the formulation of Constitutional and Judicial Reforms Commission to safeguard the independence of judiciary. During a joint press conference, all component organisations and individuals belonging to civil society, Awami Jamhuri Ittehad, Insani Huqooq Ittehad and the National Workers Party congratulated the lawyers and the entire Pakistani nation at the success of a totally peaceful and non-violent movement, which eventually forced the rulers to accept their demands. Civil society activists, politicians and lawyers, including Thaira Abdullah, Ghazala Minnahla, Sammar Minnalha, Jamil Abbasi,Yousaf Masti Khan and Iqbal Bali attended the event. Considering the restoration of deposed judges just a first step, they strongly demanded that there was an urgent need for a Constitutional and Judicial Reforms Commission and repeal of the 8th and 17th Constitutional Amendments. They also urged that the NRO be placed before Parliament and the recent judicial appointments on political basis be revoked and the Charter of Democracy also be followed in judicial appointments. They expressed grave concern over the vague political deal, the ambivalent double entendre and the ungracious manner in which the looming crises was addressed. They also said that no indemnity be provided to Gen (Retd) Pervez Musharraf in accordance with the 1973 Constitution. While speaking on the occasion, civil society activist Jamil Abbassi said we demand for an immediate joint sitting of Parliament to pass a unanimous resolution declaring all acts of Gen (Retd) Pervez Musharraf of 3rd November 2007 as unconstitutional, illegal and based on mala fide intent. He condemned the proclamation of emergency/martial Law, again deposing CJP and placing under house arrest as well as other judges for 5 months, Constitutional amendments, Presidential Ordinances, closure of independent media, targeting individual anchorpersons and subsequent PEMRA Ordinance to further gag the media; and suspension of fundamental human rights and civil liberties. He said that judicial inquiry and action should be conducted at the highest level on all these matters. He said that we are shocked and outraged to learn that hundreds of wooden coffins were ordered by the Interior Ministry and Provincial Home Department. In her address, Thaira Abdullah of Insani Huqooq Ittehad strongly condemned the use of barbaric and brute force and the ridiculously and disproportionately harsh measures taken by the federal and provincial administrations for stopping Long March. "We are hereby to renew our pledge to the nation that we are ever watchful and vigilant about the re-functionality of the Chief Justice, and all the honourable judges of the Supreme and High Courts," she added. She said that we are grieved, saddened, shocked and outraged at the manner in which JUI (F) and MQM behave to help the rulers scuttle the Long March and sit-in by using the ethnic, linguistic and provincial card to promote hostilities.
