ISLAMABAD - The World Intellectual Property Day will be observed across the world including Pakistan on April 26 to promote discussion of the role of intellectual property (IP) in encouraging innovation and creativity.
This year the theme of the World IP Day is “Movies a Global Passion” which would help lifting the movies in the world, their role in a society and their impact on development in a country.
This Day in Pakistan will be celebrated under the auspices of Intellectual Property Organization (IPO) of Pakistan which is a part of the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO).
In connection with the World IP Day, a seminar has been scheduled on April 24.Legendary personalities from film industry, Syed Noor, Director/Writer; Sangeeta,film-star/producer, Shahid, film star and other representatives of film industry; electronic and print media will also grace the occasion with their presence and valuable inputs. The WIPO gives its member countries an opportunity, the world over, to celebrate the April 26 every year as World IP day with a specific theme to create awareness and to formulate a road map for the future economic development worldwide.
“While, celebrating the World IP day, we should not forget to highlight the achievements of the IPO-Pakistan which it achieved in a very short span of time, which are commendable in arousing public awareness and sensitising the consumers of their legitimate rights to opt for genuine and branded products and services” Director General IPO Pakistan Aamir Hassan told APP.
He said that it has made efforts to curb counterfeiting and piracy with the support of enforcement agencies, fostered fair trade practices, improved service delivery in protection of Intellectual Property Rights and increased coordination to wage a war against unfair trade and piracy/plagiarism. Aamir Hassan said that it is the responsibility of all stakeholders in the public and private sectors to provide such an environment in the country which should be helpful for`creative work’ and to eradicate piracy and plagiarism.
“The concep - t of intellectual property in the world is not new, but so far our country is concerned, we will go a long way before we get really equipped with the knowledge of IP, our rights and obligations in this age of globalisation” DG IPO added.
Aamir Hassan said that IPO Pakistan is in the process to formulate a comprehensive strategy and action plan which will focus on actions to be taken on short, medium and long term basis. This strategy and action plan will define the role of key actors/organisations who shall be responsible for implementing each action, time frame and resource implications.
