Islamabad - The head of Cardiology Department in PIMS Dr Shahid Nawaz Malik, who was shot injured, passed away Friday.
He was shot in the head at the hospital premises on February 14 and his condition remained critical.  The bullet had injured the brain and doctors at PIMS had almost declared him brain dead but his family was insisting to lift him to the UK for treatment. The family had shifted the doctor to CMH, Rawalpindi. Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif had approved Rs100m for his treatment abroad.  But he succumbed to bullet injuries on Friday.  
His dead body was shifted from CMH to PIMS where doctors performed autopsy. Afterwards, it was shifted to Chakwal, his hometown for burial, informed Prof Javed Akram, Vice-Chancellor of Shaheed Zulfikar Ali Bhutto Medical University-Pims.  
It was the second incident of targeted attack in weeks as before a student nurse was short injured at the hospital. Health practitioners in PIMS have been voicing their concerns over lack of security at the hospital. Young doctors on Friday condemned the cold-blooded murder of Dr Malik, demanding foolproof security for hospital staff.
Earlier, after the attack on Dr Malik hundreds of doctors, nurses and paramedics had observed token strike and demonstrated against the targeted attack on the head of cardiology department in PIMS.
They had threatened to go on indefinite strike if the city and PIMS administrations failed to ensure foolproof security to doctors at the institute and other hospitals of the capital.
Meanwhile, Prime Minister Muhammad Nawaz Sharif has expressed grief and sorrow over the death of Dr Shahid Nawaz. While condemning the incident, the PM said that steps must immediately be taken for providing better security to hospitals, schools and other public places so that such incidents can be avoided in future.
He extended condolences to the bereaved family and prayed that Allah almighty may bless the departed soul with eternal bliss.
