ISLAMABAD - Council of Islamic Ideology (CII) Chairman Maulana Muhammad Khan Sherani has said that annulling marriage on the basis of second marriage should be avoided and abolished from the law as it is against Shariah.
The CII met here on Tuesday for the 196th time under headship of Maulana Sherani. The session discussed Dissolution of Muslim Marriage Act 1939, Protection of Pakistan Ordinance and National Security Policy to prevent sectarian violence and sex education in the school curriculum.
Talking to media persons after the session, Sherani said annulling marriage for the reason of second marriage must be avoided.
He further said husband’s imprisonment for seven years should also not be the basis for annulment of marriage because an individual convicted of a crime is worthy of mercy.
Maulana Sherani said a wife has the right of annulling marriage only if the husband fails to fulfill his marital responsibilities and treats her cruelly.
Sherani also said marriage in childhood is permissible as long as it is not performed under forbidden traditions such as Wani, but consummation is not allowed until the married girl reaches the age of 18.
