Dilapidated buildings pose risk to residents

RAWALPINDI: Due to negligence of Rawalpindi Development Authority, old buildings, majority of which were constructed during the British rule, are posing serious security risks for the residents.

Many of these buildings are located in the old city areas. Despite categorical instructions of the Punjab government and standard procedures, the RDA is not carrying out any survey to declare these buildings as dangerous for living and ordering the owners to demolish them.

Such dilapidated buildings not only pose serious threats to the residents during rains but also to the adjacent houses and buildings as well. Those residing in the adjacent houses remain under constant risk to their lives.

Some of the  people living in the old city areas said that they have recorded many complaints to the administration but still no action has been initiated against such buildings. These buildings are located mostly  in Purana Qila’ Chattian Hattian bazaar, Sarafa bazaar and Mohallah Waris Khan.

The concerned residents say that the owners of such buildings rent them with less monthly charge and those who cannot afford high rates, stay there without caring for their lives.

People have strongly protested against why RDA is not taking any initiative against such buildings and putting their lives at risk.
