ISLAMABAD - Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (Pemra) yesterday issued notices to Geo TV and ARY News for airing abusive, indecent, derogatory remarks and allegations banned under the Code of Conduct and National Action Plan.
In a statement, the media regulatory authority said the unedited material was in violation of Pemra and other laws.
The channels have been asked to explain why not a punitive action be taken against them. They have also been directed to explain their position on the airing of this highly objectionable material without any check.
Since Monday last, Pemra has initiated action against five TV channels for airing audiovisual material which the viewers found offensive, harmful and distasteful according to the legal and cultural boundaries.
Pemra asserted these channels hurled false allegations and passed highly personal, abusive and derogatory remarks against individuals and provided airtime to terror outfits threatening the state.
The authority urged the TV channels to support the National Action Plan in letter and spirit by denying space to the elements defending terror groups or those attempting to divert state institutions’ attention from the ongoing war on terror.
The Pemra said it had resolved to ensure that TV screens would not be used as a platform to spread hate, malaise and indecency against any individual, institution or state or telecast anything which viewers find offensive and harmful to the state, themselves, their children or the society in general.
