ISLAMABAD – Expressing concern over the law and order situation of the province, the Supreme Court Thursday directed the spy agencies to give in-camera briefing to the court regarding Balochistan issue and point out the areas of the province where the situation was hostile.
The court also sought detailed report from Balochistan chief secretary regarding incidents of target killings and arrest of the accused involved in the crime during last three years. The court observed that it was the duty of police and politicians to keep situation stable in Balochistan.
A three-member bench of the apex court headed by Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry is hearing a petition on Balochistan law and order situation and target killings. The petition has been filed by Balochistan High Court Bar Association President Hadi Shakeel Ahmed.
During the hearing, Inspector General of Balochistan police and chief secretary appeared before the bench.
The chief justice inquired from the Balochistan chief secretary what was happening in the province as two more policemen were killed the other day. The chief secretary replied that they were hopeful to stabilise the law and order situation. “You may have seen the stable situation in files but the position is out of control on the ground,” Justice Khilji Arif Hussain said.
Expressing concern over the closing down of schools in Balochistan, the CJP said the teachers were reluctant to perform their duties due to worsening law and order situation and ordered that court must be informed about the steps taken in this regard. The court further inquired about the steps the provincial government had taken to enforce local body system.
The court also expressed dissatisfaction over the Sindh police report about murder of Mir Bakhtiar Domki’s wife and daughter. Sindh police claimed that some progress had been made but could not be revealed in the open court.
The court directed the M1, ISI and IB to give court an in-camera briefing on Balochistan issue. It is to be noted that attorney general for Pakistan had told the bench that ISI and MI wanted to brief the court in chamber regarding Balochistan issue.
Both top spy agencies had already submitted their classified reports regarding the matter. The court adjourned the hearing till April 3.
