Islamabad - There can be a great threat if the present security-driven state approach is not converted into welfare-driven state approach, said Senator Farhatullah Babar.
The lawmaker was addressing a roundtable conference on “Pakistan’s political turmoil and the way forward” organised by Riphah International University here on Wednesday.
The conference was attended by all segments of society including students, representatives of think tanks and NGOs, and members of civil society.
Addressing the conference, Babar presented political turmoil in context of the role of military establishment. He highlighted that great threat would be much greater in its scope if the present security-driven state approach was not converted into welfare-driven state approach.
He said failure of the government was not only the responsibility of the military but also of political leadership. However, this time the threat of the fifth martial law was overshadowed by the parliament.
He said it was a very positive sign that for the first time in the history of Pakistan parliament emerged as an institution.
Talking to the participants of the conference, Ali Muhammad Khan, MNA of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), said there was a strong need to develop national character in accordance with the principles given by Jinnah under Islamic principles to address political, social and economic challenges of the country for better governance. He was of the view that the sit-in had achieved its real objective to energise this government to listen to the voice of the people and act as a responsive.
The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf’s struggle is not only to acquire power but also to bring a positive change in the society.
He said, “We want to develop Pakistan as a state which is looked by the world as a destination of knowledge and opportunities.”
