ISLAMABAD – Allama Iqbal Open University (AIOU) has devised a comprehensive plan to promote education in every nook and corner of the country through distance-learning system, said the university’s vice chancellor Prof. Dr. Nazir Ahmed Sangi. He said this while delivering his key-note address at the two-day international conference on basic education, held in Chinese city of Chengdu. The plan is also aimed at meeting millennium development goal, ensuring education for all by the year 2015. Those who attended the forum included former President of Philippine Fidal Ramos, former Premier of Nepal Bista, Minister for Education Sri Lanka and Secretary Planning Commission of India, says a message received here Monday.
The Vice Chancellor gave a comprehensive presentation in the conference on the efforts, being made by the government and the AIOU particularly for promoting basic education in the country through various means.
He said, special focus has been laid on quality improvement, uniform access to educational resources, extensive training of teachers in ICT, establishment of reliable and accessible public ICT infrastructure for remote locations and introduction of vocational and socio-economic curriculum.
The vice Chancellor said that Pakistan is signatory of international declarations on basic education. The present democratic government has provided constitutional strength to political commitment and free education is now constitutional right
Dr. Sangi said open and distance education is also being tried at massive scale to overcome the problem of illiteracy.
