Punjab, NWFP in National U-21 Football semis

ISLAMABAD - NWFP and Punjab reached the semi-finals of the third Under-21 National Football Championship by beating Islamabad and Afghan Football Club respectively on penalty kicks on Sunday here at Jinnah Stadium, Pakistan Sports Complex. In the first semi-final, hosts Islamabad and NWFP played a draw game at 2-2 after 90 minutes of play. However, Islamabad failed to lock horns on penalty kicks and put the ball once in the net while their opponents wasted one penalty and scored four goals in the rest of four attempts. At the half way, match was leveled 1-1, Muhammad Farooq led the host in 40th minutes by scoring a beautiful goal. After five minutes, Rashid Khan leveled the match by scoring an excellent goal on his individual efforts. Match was leveled at 1-1 at water interval. Meanwhile, in the second part of the match, both teams added each one goal to make the score 2-2. Badshah Hussain scored the third goal of the match in 46th minute by led NWFP 2-1 in the vital fixture of the day. Zubair Ahmed succeeded to save hosts in the 84th minutes of the match by scoring a classic goal. To decide the first quarter-final of the national junior soccer fixture, each team was given five penalties kicks. Islamabad could score one goal and wasted four kicks while NWFP scored four goals to qualify for the semi-final. Meanwhile, in the second quarter-final of the day, Punjab locked the horns with Afghan FC, as strikers of the both teams failed to drill the opponents' defense. No team could score in the 90 minutes play. Extra 30 minutes were remained goalless. However, on the penalties, Punjab jumped into the semi-final by scoring four goals while Afghan FC could make only two accurate shots. Waqas Ali, Abdul Razzaq, Zafar Ullah and Asif Khan scored for winners while Naeem Rahil was aimless. Afghan replied through Abdullah Khan and Maaz ullah while Shireen Agha and Mehmood Khan were unsuccessful to score goal. Punjab will take on Wohaib FC or FATA in second semi-final on January 28 at the same venue. Director Media of Pakistan Football Federation at Islamabad Irfan Khan Niazi said that PEL would meet Sindh in the third quarterfinal while Federally Administrated Tribal Areas (FATA) will talk on defending champions Wohaib Football Club Lahore in the fourth quarterfinal of the 3rd Under-21 National Football Championship 2009 on Monday (today) at the same venue.
