ISLAMABAD - The Met department predictions of more rains in the country bring smiles on the dull faces due to sizzling heat of the sun. Rainy season, though it lull heat, is more a threat than we think. Showers certainly increase the number of viral and bacterial infections, and gastroenteritis cases. The rainy season also increases number of diarrhea and vomiting cases. Cases of other water-borne diseases like jaundice and cholera are also likely to go up in rainy season. Cholera is also among those diseases that outbreaks in monsoon. Though Cholera cases are reported throughout the year, the maximum cases are reported during monsoon season. It mostly occurs due to consumption of contaminated water or food. "As an infectious disease worst thing about cholera is that it can spread very rapidly if not checked in time, "TheNation learnt. Monsoon doesn't bring good news for arthritis patients and people with chronic lung diseases. The most common among the diseases during the monsoon is stomach disorder. It is necessary to avoid junk food off the streets and if you do end up with an upset belly, keep yourself hydrated by having plenty of water, says Dr Hassan Raschid, a local practitioner. Humidity also affects human beings in rainy season, he added. When the Met department was contacted, the official confirmed that humidity level starts increasing at evening in the twin cities but it is not yet threatening as the humidity level is 60 per cent and likely to be increased. He confirmed that the level of humidity in the days to come, in the month of July, especially town would be in the grip of high-level humidity, which is not a healthy sign for the people with chronic lung diseases. As more rains are expected in July, the rainy season would develop fungal diseases on the unexposed parts of the body. With the beginning of rainy season, the hospitals report increase in the cases of viral and bacterial infections, gastroenteritis and malaria. When contacted, Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS), Medical Record Room sources confirmed that seasonal disease cases increase in monsoon. To prevent the various diseases that grip the populace in monsoon, the Ministry of Health should launch countrywide campaign to check breeding of mosquitoes because stagnant water is a haven of larvae breeding to out break malaria. Garbage in the cities, which gets collected in drains, is a birthplace for mosquitoes and insects. The swelling sewerage pipes and open joints in the water supply also lead to water contamination also cause water-borne diseases. People have to face host of difficulties, as at town and city level, there is no such preparation to keep the environment and surroundings clean. Prior to beginning of rainy season, preparations are essential but we do not see such moves at individual and government level as seasonal diseases play havoc with the lives of citizens.
