ISLAMABAD – Claiming reduction in crime rate, the Islamabad police registered 1902 cases during current the outgoing year as compared to 6548 cases registered in 2011.
The ICT also claimed to have arrested 2000 criminals during the current year and recovered a total of 50 vehicles, eight Kalashnikovs, 200 pistols, 128.842 kilograms hashish, 2256 wine bottles, 29.216 kilogram heroin, 5.836 kilogram opium and stolen items worth Rs 100 million from their possession, the data available with TheNation revealed on Wednesday.
“We have seen surge in crime rate this year. Majority of policemen were deputed on VVIPs security, while remaining have been struggling all the year to provide relief to citizens of Islamabad, but all in vain. Car theft cases have increased to an alarming rate in Islamabad,” a police officer told TheNation on condition of anonymity.
He said that the police registered only a small fraction of cases against a huge number of complain reported to various police station by citizens.
Interestingly, the Interior Minister had told the National Assembly during the last session of the Lower House that over 2,000 personnel of Islamabad police (out of a total 10,000) perform round the clock security duties with VIPs and VVIPs.
These 2000 police officials include a superintendent of police (who supervise the VIP and VVIP security), three officers of DSP and ASP rank, 25 inspectors, 104 sub-inspectors, 160 ASIs, 309 head constables, 1,607 constables, 43 lady constables and 82 driver constables. However, it is still a mystery, how did the Islamabad capital police manage to reduce crime rate despite the fact that 20 per cent of its actual strength is not working on general duty.
According to the data, the police arrested a total of 2000 criminals including 300 proclaimed offenders as well as a dozen of court absconders during the outgoing year.
During the ongoing year, the Marggalla police registered a total of 499 cases and arrested a total 274 criminals including 98 absconders. Margallah police also recovered 28 vehicles, 30 pistols, 2.701 kilogram hashish, 591 wine bottles from them.
Similarly, Shalimar police registered a total of 326 cases and arrested 188 criminals including 94 absconders besides recovering six vehicles, 12 pistols, 3.355 kilogram hashish, 414 wine bottles from them.
Likewise, Tarnol police registered 323 cases during the current year and arrested 254 criminals including 254 absconders. A total of two vehicles, 3 Kalashnikov, 73 pistols, 80.216 kilogram hashish, 34 wine bottles, 4.396 kilogram opium and 26.434 kilogram heroin were also recovered by Shalimar police during this period.
Ensuring effective policing, Golra police registered 326 cases against criminals and arrested 189 persons including 55 absconders. The police also recovered three vehicles, three Kalashnikovs, 47 pistols, 34.955 kilogram hashish, 19 wine bottles, 2.870 gram heroin and 1.440 kilogram opium from their possession too.
Ramana police also contributed its efforts to ensure effective policing and registered a total of 347 cases against criminals. A total of 207 accused including 24 absconders were arrested besides recovery of three vehicles, two Kalashnikovs, 16 pistols, 4.615 kilogram hashish and 468 wine bottles from them.
The Women Police registered 82 cases during the current year and arrested 58 accused besides recovery of 410 wine bottles, one pistol and three-kilogram hashish.
Saddar Zone of Islamabad police also remained active to trace those culprits involved in theft, dacoity activities and recovered snatched as well as stolen valuables worth Rs. 85 million from their possession.
Investigation officers also completed probe on 1170 cases during this period and submitted their challan into relevant courts.
It is still a mystery that how did Islamabad capital police managed to reduce crime during current year by registering only 530 FIRs as compared to 6548 FIRs registered during 2011.
