Supreme Court reserves decision in grade 22 promotions case

Supreme Court has reserved the decision in a case of grade 22 promotions without seniority. Supreme Court has issued notices to 54 recently promoted officers from Grade-21 to Grade-22 to present their stand on the issue in the court within a week, a private TV reported. A bench of the apex court led by Chief Justice Iftikhar Mohammed Chaudhry heard a petition challenging recent promotions on Friday. The lawyers completed their arguments today. The Chief Justice in his remarks said: Despite the media coverage of the case it is felt that the promoted civil servants have been unaware of the case. Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry said that people will support the government if it takes decisions on merit. The Chief Justice directed the Secretary Establishment to issue seven-day notices to the promoted officers, so they can present their stance on the case if they want. On Sept 4, Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani had reshuffled almost the entire bureaucracy, replacing over a dozen federal secretaries and announcing changes in several other ministries by promoting several civil servants to Grade-22. The bureaucrats ignored by the prime minister have moved the court on the issue.
