Islamabad - Popular amongst the masses for taking bribes, Islamabad police did not spare even its colleagues and took bribes for letting the ghost employees absent from their point of duty.
“Deputy Inspector General (DIG) (Security) Islamabad police, Sultan Azam Temuri has suspended all moharirs (head clerks) of the security division so that they could not influence the ongoing investigation to identify the ghost employees in the force,” said police sources on Monday.
The DIG has also constituted a committee comprising Superintendent of Police Jamil Hashmi and Superintendent of Police Rizwan Gondal to probe into the matter. Soon after their suspension, the DIG has issued directives to depute Assistant-Sub Inspectors in place of the suspended moharirs to run the affairs of the security division. A source in Islamabad police said that some of the moharirs used to facilitate the ghost employees by mentioning them present in the attendance register in return of bribe while the ghost employees actually remained absent from their duty for long durations.
When asked, SP Jamil Hashmi confirmed to The Nation that the DIG has marked them inquiry to identify those involved in the practice. He said that the two-member committee has so far identified some 10-11 cases where the personnel in connivance with the concerned moharir used to stay away from duty while he was assigned duty and marked present on the duty register. “We are relying on technology to identify such cases. We have started examining the record pertaining to weapon collection, entry in duty register and mobile data of the employees to reach the truth. The location of an employee for a particular day would be verified through his mobile’s data and location which would be later reconciled with the duty register and point of duty so that no one is grilled unjustifiably”, he added. He said that maximum penalty for what he viewed as ‘crime against the force itself’ could be dismissal from service.
However, he said the committee would forward its recommendations to the DIG for final decision on such cases, if found any. He said due to the continuing deception by the ghost employees, the rest of the force have had to perform 12 hours duty. “This practice should come to an end now and we would recommend to the high ups to take strict action against these ghost employees”, he added.
