Journalists demand arrest of Raja Assad's killers

RAWALPINDI - Editor-in-Chief Nawa-i-Waqt Group veteran journalist Majid Nizami Monday visited the house of the senior reporter of daily The Nation and Waqt TV Raja Assad Hammed who was slain by unidentified assailants Thursday last. Majid Nizami offered Fateha for the departed soul and expressed profound grief and sorrow over his brutal murder. He remembered Assad as a committed, energetic and a professional journalist and termed his assassination as a loss to Nawa-i-Waqt group. He also announced a special compensation amount of Rs 200,000 for the widow and financial aid of Rs 5,000 per month for his daughter for the rest of her life. He said that the organization would remain in contact with the widow and her daughter to fulfil their needs. Meanwhile, journalists on Monday took out a protest rally outside the Rawalpindi Press Club against the delay in the arrest of culprits involved in the murder of Raja Assad. The rally was taken out jointly by the Crime and Courts Reporters Association Rawalpindi and Photojournalists Association Rawalpindi and Islamabad. They were holding banners and placards inscribed with slogans against the assassination of the Raja Assad in front of his house, terming it a "Conspiracy of powers that be", which fear the power of pen. Addressing the journalists, President Crime and Courts Reporters Association Rawalpindi Shahid Malik said Raja Assad had laid down his life for a noble cause and set an example for other media persons. He condemned the ghastly assassination and urged the government to investigate the killing and bring to justice those responsible for committing the crime.
