Ex-interior secretary speaks of spy chiefs’ dictation

BB murder case

RAWALPINDI - Former interior secretary Syed Kamal Shah told an anti-terrorism court on Monday that chiefs of the three intelligence agencies had summoned him and the then Crises Management Cell Chairman Brig (r) Javed Iqbal Cheema in headquarters on December 28, 2007 and handed over a written press briefing mentioning reason of death of Benazir Bhutto to share with media.
He said the then chiefs of ISI, MI and IB informed them that they (chiefs) had just returned after attending an important meeting in President's camp office in Rawalpindi and conveying the message to them, he said.
He added that they were ordered to tell media what was written in the press note they were given.
“There should be no any amendment or inclusion or exclusion of any question by you,” Shah told about briefing.
"I and Brig (r) Javed Iqbal Cheema acted as we were directed by the chiefs of three leading intelligence agencies and told media the reason for death of BB in a gun-and-bomb attack outside Liaquat Bagh on December 27, 2007," he stated.
Kamal Shah stated this as prosecution witness before Anti-Terrorism Court (ATC) Rawalpindi Number 1 Special Judge Pervaiz Ismail Joya, who took up BB murder case at Adyala Jail amid tight security. The court made the statement of the former interior secretary as part of court record.
The prosecution witness told further that he was written a letter by former Premier BB in which she claimed that her life was in great danger. Being interior secretary, he said, he forwarded the letter to PM and president office as he had no power to provide foolproof security to VVIPs. He said that in response to the letter he forwarded, he got instructions from two top offices of the country to tight the security of former prime ministers Chaudhry Shujaat Ali and Shaukat Aziz. "BB's name was not mentioned in the instructions for security," Kamal Shah said adding, that however, he in capacity of secretary interior had wrote letters to IGs and home secretaries of four provinces to shield Benazir during her electioneering campaign.
Meanwhile, the statements of the two prosecution witnesses were completed while a defence lawyer cross examined a witness. The court later deferred hearing of Benazir assassination case.
Talking to The Nation, Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) Special Public Prosecutor Chaudhry Azhar Ali said that former interior secretary Syed Kamal Shah faced ATC No 1 and had recorded his statement saying he along with the then Crises Management Cell Chairman Brig (r) Javed Iqbal Cheema were summoned by chiefs of ISI, MI and IB. They were provided a written press note and directed to speak with media what was mentioned in press note.
