ISLAMABAD - The human rights cell of Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) on Friday demanded that provisions of Qisas (retribution) and Diyat (blood money) needed to be reviewed.
“The provisions of Qisas and Diyat need to be reviewed and amended in the spirit of the law and justice. No Islamic society or country allows this. This is travesty of justice and must be rejected,” the PPP human rights cell demanded, while condemning the brutal killing of Farzana Iqbal in the premises of Lahore High Court. The cell also called for repeal of all the provisions of Qisas and Diyat laws that allow easy settlements for murder.
Farzana Iqbal died outside the LHC building as she awaited justice, but before she could get it, her own family members attacked her, which subsequently led to her death. It must be investigated why no officers of the state could protect her from the executioners, the cell demanded. “Honour killings are not simply cultural acts, they are almost sustained by a law that allows easy acquittals for murders, especially those in the name of honour,” Says Dr Nafisa Shah, PPP HR cell’s central coordinator.
The cell calls upon the law commission, the govt and parliament to work towards making laws that ensure punishment to the perpetrators.
