Excise officials charge Fee for Free system

KARACHI – The officials of Sindh Excise and Taxation Department, Motor Vehicle Registration Wing, have fixed Rs 100 fee despite the launching of online system as free vehicle verification system, TheNation has learnt here.According to details, Sindh Excise and Taxation Department has made the recently launched online system vehicle verification free of cost to facilitate to people but the department’s special counter of vehicle verification in MVR Karachi office getting rupees 100 against each vehicle verification.A car broker namely Raheel Ahmed informed that officials of E&T who were deputed at verification counter are charging Rs 100 for a car verification despite the fact that the system is totally free.He further said that 3 months back, the officials were charging Rs 50 for providing each verification letter to the vehicles owner but after the launching of online verification system, they doubled the fee.Another man namely Ayaz Ansari said people do not know about fee of verification and even departmental staffers were not informed about such sort of fraud.He said that people usually contacted to the agents and pay Rs 150 to 200 to the agents and agents pay Rs 100 to the official against the verification. Sources of MVR informed that in routine, almost 500 vehicles have daily been verified from Karachi MVR office and officials of the said department are earning around Rs 50,000 daily.     Sources pointed out that the income generate in the name of verification is divided among the officials of MVR because government has yet to impose charges on verification. When this scribe contacted the Sindh Excise and Taxation Director General Shoaib Siddique for version, he did not attend the phone calls.Meanwhile, a delegation led Shia cleric Maulana Syed Aun Muhammad Naqvi called the member of the MQM Co-ordination Committee Saif Yar Khan at Khursheed Begum secretariat. In-charges and office-bearers of the MQM Ulema Committee of the MQM and Karachi Tanzeemi Committee were also present during the meeting. Overall political situation of the country, incidents of targeted killings and sectarian harmony were discussed at length during the meeting. Saif Yar Khan expressed concerns on the targeted killings of MQM workers and said that it was the part of a nefarious conspiracy to undermine peace and order in Karachi.Member of MQM Coordination committee Saif Yar Khan said that MQM Chief Altaf Hussain has played a positive role for promoting unity, brotherhood and peace among Muslims in order to root out sectarianism. He regretted that certain elements were trying to kindle sectarian strife in Karachi but hoped that this would be foiled by remaining united. Fateha was offered for the MQM workers, office-bearers and sympathizers killed in the incidents of violence and terrorism in Karachi.
