Lawyers vow to continue struggle

KARACHI - Leaders of the ongoing lawyers' movement have vowed to accelerate their struggle for a free and independent judiciary. "The lawyers will take out rallies in the metropolis from January 5, for the reinstatement of deposed judges including Chief Justice Iftikhar Chaudhry," said Mohammad Ali Abbasi, the newly elected President of Karachi Bar Association (KBC) and Naeem Qureshi, the secretary, while addressing a general body meeting held here at Shuhda-i-Punjab Hall of the City Courts on Thursday. Abbasi vowed to continue their movement till achieving goals of the restoration of pre-November 2, 2007 judiciary. He added that lawyers were still committed to their noble cause and united at a single platform for the reinstatement of the deposed CJP and other judges. He said the ruling PPP, which was elected by the votes of the people, should fulfil its commitments regarding restoration of free judiciary and reinstatement of the deposed judges. Abbasi also strongly condemned the government's silence over the US and Indian aggressions against Pakistan. He urged the Pakistani rulers to reconsider their foreign policy. Speaking on the occasion, Naeem Qureshi said lawyers would take out rallies from January 5 for restoration of free judiciary and reinstatement of deposed judges. He also appealed the people belonging to different walks of life to continue their support for the lawyers' movement and join hands with the legal fraternity. Earlier, local lawyers, on the call of Pakistan Lawyers' Rabita Council (PLRC), boycotted the court proceedings in the City Courts and Malir District Court. They also staged protest against non-reinstatement of deposed judges. The lawyers were carrying placards and banners while chanting slogans against the government for not fulfilling their demands as well.
