KARACHI – The Karachi Electric Supply Company stated that Sunday was marked by attacks on its offices and assets by defaulters and power pilferers in separate incidents across the city. The KESC reiterated that it had a zero-tolerance policy against willful defaulters and those engaged in blatant power theft. In a press statement, the KESC said that unscrupulous elements had lately taken the route of vandalism and opened acts of aggression against the power utility, thinking that their actions would force it to allow them to continue their illegal actions. “On the contrary, the KESC has a simple philosophy that all consumers have to pay for what they use and there is no concept of free electricity.”In one of the major incidents of the day in Liaquatabad; since the burning down to cinders of the Al Karam Sub-Station on Friday, due to their own massive overloading by the connected residential and commercial consumers, the defaulting consumers decided to take the law in their own hands. Despite a collosal Rs 400 million default by virtue of unpaid bills and only a 40 per cent billing paying customer base, the defaulting consumers took to the streets, creating law and order situation and ransacking the KESC local area office in FC Area of Liaquatabad. The vandals torched a KESC truck and damaged two others. Later on, five to six armed mobsters entered into the KESC office by placing ladders on the side wall and ransacked the entire premises. The KESC had offered the defaulting consumers to agree on a payment plan and join hands in removing illegal connections as a precursor to rehabilitating the burnt down Substation. Positive action by the consumers in majority is still awaited.
