KARACHI - Police have registered two treason cases against another Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) leader Waseem Akhtar who had served as the adviser to Sindh Chief Minister during president General Pervez Musharraf’s regime.
The cases were registered for inciting public to violence and harming national interests through his remarks during a talk show on a private television channel.
The cases were registered with Sohrab Goth and SITE Super Highway Industrial Area police stations late on Friday night.
The first case was registered with the SITE Super Highway Industrial Area Police Station against the MQM leader. Police included clauses of the Anti-Terrorism Act and Telegraph in FIR No 451/15. The complainant in his statement had termed Waseem Akhtar’s remarks against the people of Pakistan, adding these remarks had hurt him being a Pakistani and he decided to lodge a case against Akhtar.
Similarly, another case was registered against MQM leader at the Sohrab Goth Police Station by another ordinary citizen wherein it was claimed that he had incited the general public for violence and harmed the national interests.
The police included the same sections of the Anti-Terrorism and Telegraph Act against Akhtar in the FIR No 279/15 for criticising country’s intelligence agencies and hurting the sentiments of the people.
No arrest had been made till filing of this report. Police said the cases had been transferred to investigation wings for further action into the case.
Treason cases were also registered against MQM chief Altaf Hussain a few months ago for criticising country’s intelligence agencies. Earlier a day ago, a treason case was registered with Gulbahar Police Station against a senior MQM leader Muhammad Anwar who is currently residing in London.
