KARACHI - Former provincial minister for sports and renowned orthopedic surgeon of Pakistan, Dr Muhammad Ali Shah passed away on Monday evening at a private hospital in America.
He was suffering with blood cancer disease.
Dr Shah was elected as member of Sindh Assembly on the ticket of MQM from Karachi PS-103 in general elections of 2008 and served as provincial minister for sports till 2012. While holding dual nationality, he resigned from the provincial assembly seat recently and was appointed as advisor to the chief minister.
He was a renowned orthopedic surgeon of Pakistan. He was the member of governing body of Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) and also the President of Karachi Cricket Association. Dr Shah had successfully organised a World XI versus Pakistan XI cricket match in Karachi last year, providing a return of international cricketers to the country at a time when no foreign team was willing to undertake a tour.
Dr Shah was also a recipient of President’s Pride of Performance’ Tamgha-e-Bisalat, Sitara-e-Imtiaz and other awards.
Meanwhile, MQM leader Babar Ghori has confirmed that the dead body of Dr Shah would be brought from the US to Karachi, where he would be buried.
He was born on October 30, 1946 at Bareilly, India. His father, Asghar Ali Shah also served as a judge for many years.
Dr Shah was a cricket lover and he was the in-charge of Asghar Ali Shah Cricket Stadium in North Nazimabad, Karachi. Every year in Ramazan, Twenty20 Cricket Tournament is being organised.
MQM chief Altaf Hussain, MQM’s Rabita Committee and other political and religious personalities expressed their sorrow over the death of Dr Shah.
