ISLAMABAD (APP) - A large number of visitors have complained that the contractor at Benazir International Airport Islamabad is minting undue money from them in the name of entry and parking fees. They seemed perturbed over unfair charges while authorities concerned looked least interested to address the problem. The contractor charges Rs. 15 to Rs. 30 as a parking fee besides Rs. 20 from each visitor, they told APP. This correspondent also saw a clash between a visitor and the staff deputed at the gate to issue entry tickets in which the earlier was demanding Rs. 120 back from them. The furious visitor was asking them for immediate return of the amount, while the staffer was giving lame excuse that he did not issue the ticket, saying the ticket issuing staffer has left for home after completing his duty. Another visitor Jalal Khan, who came to receive his sister and family coming from Dubai, said I have paid Rs.160 to the contractor as my mother, brothers cousins accompanied me to welcome the sister returning home after a period of 10 years. It is not justified to charge such a huge amount in the name of entry fee, he insisted. Another visitor Shakeel Ahmed said he paid Rs. 400 to contractor in the name of entry fee as some days ago he came to the airport along with his relatives to receive family members, coming back after performing the Hajj. Zubair Khan, another visitor said an important fact is that the contractor does not take the responsibility of taking care of the vehicles after issuing the receipts. The contractor has written on back of the receipt that the contractor does not hold any esponsibility for theft of vehicle. He is only receiving parking fee. Owner should protect his vehicle by himself, he added. He questioned that if they are not taking the responsibility of the parked vehicles then why they are charging fee from people. When contacted, an official of the Civil Aviation Authority said, the authority had introduced the concept of entry fee just to discourage the unnecessary visitors who use facilities provided at the airport like toilets, cafeteria, public phone booths etc. He was of the view that this initiative was also aimed avoiding any untoward incident in the prevailing law and order situation in the country. To a question, the official said the entry and parking fees are also a source of income generating for the government, adding the contract is awarded every year in a transparent manner. To another question about not taking the responsibility of the vehicles by the contractor, he said the practice is being followed across the country.
