PPP observes Black Day; holds demonstrations

KARACHI - Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) on Sunday observed Black Day in memory of the day when the former military ruler General Zia-ul-Haq over thrown the elected government of the then Prime Minister Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto on July 5, 1977. On the directives of President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani, PPP office bearers had organised the Black Day to condemn the intervention by a dictator against an elected government. Protest demonstration and meetings were held in the metropolis to mark the Black Day. The central meeting of PPP Women Wing was held at Zardari House which was addressed by the PPP Women Wing Central President and MNA, Faryal Talpur. She denounced the military coup by former General Zia-ul-Haq on July 5, 1977, against the elected government of PPP founding chairman, Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto. Talpur said that those who criticised ZA Bhutto, now openly admitted that he was the man who launched the struggle of masses and condemned the elite specific policies and programmes. The imperialists powers got him killed by the judiciary manipulated by the imperialist stooge General Zia-ul-Haq because Bhutto was the hero of Pakistanis national liberation revolution. He, as a great nationalist, struggled to make the Pakistani federation stronger by ensuring constitutional rights to federating units, she added. Talpur said today they were not only sad but were proud of the sacrifices of Bhutto. We also remember the sacrifices of Benazir Bhutto. We pledge that we will continue his mission and will never hesitate to sacrifice our lives too, she said. However, various meetings and protest demonstration were also held in the metropolis to mark the Black Day. PPPs District Central, West, East, Malir and District South were arranged the meetings and protest demonstration in their areas. Central protest demonstration was held at Peoples Secretariat Karachi, which was addressed by the CM Sindh Advisor Rashid Rabbani, Waqar Mehdi and others. While, CM Advisor Sharmila Farooqui, PPP leader Sohail Abidi and PPP Karachi acting President Haji Ismatullah Khan also addressed the meeting and protest demonstration at Nusrat Bhutto Colony District Central. They said that Zia and Musharraf destroyed the democracy in Pakistan adding that Zia introduced the Kalashnikov and heroin cultures in the country. They said that July 5 remains the darkest day in the history of Pakistan saying that Zia-ul-Haq overthrown the elected government and seized the fundamental rights of people by bulldozing the Constitution.
